Borne from surrealist practices, the exquisite corpse is essentially a collection of ideas from several artists, who subscribe to particular rules. The method is an examination of collaborative thinking and honours the mystique of accident as well as the individual artist’s perspective within a cooperative effort.

Based on a traditional parlour-game, it initially involved passing a piece of paper amongst a group of people who would each add a word secretly, before folding the sheet and passing it to the next player. The name ‘cadavre exquis’ derived from one of the first games which had produced the line ‘Le cadavre exquis boira le vin nouveau’ (‘The exquisite corpse will drink the young wine’)."

There are two main ways of employing the method, in which a collaborator:
1) adds to a composition in sequence, by following a rule
2) adds to the art, in which he/she is allowed to see only the end of what the previous person contributed.

The aim of this project is to coherently incorporate this method into live performance. It will focus on the various artists based in Waterford.

The city is merely an empty vessel -- a carcass, but it’s the ideas, agency and movement of the people (artists included*) who live here, that make up the motley creation which is Waterford. The beauty is the creation is always evolving. The evolution of the city doesn’t stem from one stream, but instead is driven by both tradition and novelty, and grows in an arterious manner, drawing inspiration from any and every corner.
